Maker Labs Teach Perseverance:

Teaching our kids to work hard and to stick with something even when they keep hitting that wall is no easy task, as a parent or as an educator. It’s tough to watch and to resist the urge to make things easier for them.

Makerlabs are rising up in a small number of libraries, schools and business. With the unstructured time and materials they offer for kids to work on their own projects, solve problems together, and try things out over and over again, makerspaces can be an exciting laboratory.

This trial and error (emphasis on the error) is another extension of exploration and experimentation. Kids try things, without the pressure of a grade or a big red mark on their paper. Instead, in this environment, where everyone is working and failing, they’re freer to say, “Oh this didn’t work out, how can I make it work?” It’s not making mistakes, but how kids react to the “wall” that matters. It’s all about turning that initial ding in one’s confidence into a chance to learn. That’s ultimately empowering and it’s special.

Vinyl & Laser Cutting

GRADE: 6-8

Learn Computer aided design basics and then create your own custom shirt. Additionally, learn how to use a laser cutter to cut, etch, and engrave designs in a variety of materials. Work with wood, paper, cardboard and more! Using graphics software to cut intricate designs and engrave highly detailed images at the touch of a button. The sky’s the limit with this simple and versatile tool.

3D Printing

GRADE: 6-8

3D printing is an additive manufacturing process whereby objects are built up from plastic filament, liquid resin, layers of powder, and even biocompatible or edible materials. Desktop 3D printing is today’s printing press, putting rapid prototyping, customizable products, and individualized medical appliances in reach of the general public. Literacy in basic 3D modeling and manufacturing is an essential skill for future STEM success in this country. In this course students will learn how to be “makers” by using various 3D modeling software, then printing actual physical objects that they have designed and modeled themselves.

Electronic Wizards: Intro

GRADE: 4-8

Gain new skills in programming and electronics engineering with an introduction to microcontrollers. The students will use the microcontroller board to read sensors, control motors and lights, and upload their hand-built code that interacts with the real world. Learn the Arduino™ programming language, which is based on C/C++. No previous electronics or programming experience is required!

Electronic Wizardry: Smart Inventions

GRADE: 5-8

In Electronic Wizardry: Smart Inventions you will design, plan, program, and build an electronic invention while using an Arduino and learning how to code. An Arduino is a micro-controntroller, a small computer used as the brain of the robot which can be programed to control the way buttons, motors, switches, sensors, lights, and other electronic parts interact. By the end of this program you will have learned about many of the cool ways computers and coding are everywhere in your life, and how to plan and build your own amazing devices.

Rocketry Maker Lab

GRADE: 6-8

Learn techniques to design your own rocket. Then, use our laser cutters and 3D printers to build your own custom designed rocket. Make a custom Arduino rocket launcher with the bells and whistles that you add in. Work with 3D printers, balsa cutting, electronic circuitry and more!

JunkYard Wars Maker Lab

GRADE: 6-8

Using Arduino motor controllers, electronic components and combine them with everyday items like, wood, paper, cardboard students will have a chance to create fun, imaginative contraptions! Students will then enhance their creation using Mozek Games very own Maker lab, consisting of laser cutters, 3d printers and vinyl cutter. The sky’s the limit with these tools and instruction
